Amesbury Abbey Memorial
Description
The memorial is a plaque commemorating the Units of the 2nd AIF United Kingdom Force who were stationed at the Abbey during the Second World War. It is in the form of a scroll, which outlines a short history of the UK Force, with the scroll surrounded by plaques of the units who served in the Force. There is also a bronze plaque honouring 50 years of Peace dedicated by the then Minister of Defence the Hon Robert Ray on behalf of the Australian people. The 2nd AIF United Kingdom memorial will remain at the Abbey in perpetuity as it has been added to the Abbey Deeds.
History
This memorial is dedicated to the Australian Army contingent, assigned in 1940 to augment the defences of the British Isles, and whose headquarters were located here. The Australian Force was amongst the almost 10,000 officers and men to disembark at Gourock UK, on the 17th June 1940. They comprised approximately one-third of the 6th Division and the corps troops raised with it, plus some 450 infantry reinforcements for that Division.

Mrs E Mary Cornelius-Reid MBE, AM is the owner of Amesbury Abbey (nursing home), and together with her late husband arranged the layout and installation of the memorial and continue as custodian.

Church St, Amesbury, England.
From Salisbury take Churchill Way (A36), turn onto Castle Rd which becomes Fourmile Hill, Salisbury Rd, The Centre and Countess Rd(A345). Turn left onto High St which becomes Church St.
The Memorial is located in the ground floor reception rooms of Amesbury Abbey. The memorial is open 7 days a week from 9am to 5pm.
