An often-overlooked role of a peacekeeper is to provide humanitarian aid to those who need it most.

The 1st Australian Field Hospital deployed to Timor-Leste as part of the Australian led International Force for East Timor (INTERFET) in 1999.

The unit’s main purpose was to provide health support to members of INTERFET, however, it also provided humanitarian aid to the Timorese people whose access to healthcare was limited during the crisis.
