In 2006, following widespread violence and civil unrest in Timor-Leste, Australian personnel were deployed to Dili amongst international forces assembled for Operation Astute. As part of the International Stabilisation Force (ISF), Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel were responsible for stabilising the situation, facilitating the evacuation of Australians and other foreigners and assisting to create a safe and secure environment through which the crisis could be resolved.

ISF members wore this patch during Op Astute which depicts a map of the island of Timor on top of a crocodile. The black, yellow and red colours represent the flag of Timor-Leste.
