Australian war service research activity
Learning about your family’s defence service history can help to form new connections with family, friends and community members who served in Australian conflicts, and uncover untold stories that form part of your history.
A new education activity encourages students to learn about our veterans and wartime history using DVA’s Nominal Rolls. DVA manages four of Australia’s Nominal Rolls: the Second World War, Korean War, Vietnam War and Gulf War.
The education resources can be used by families and teachers to help upper primary and lower secondary school students to research Australian war service records relevant to their own families, as well as two examples of well-known veterans, Sister Vivian Bullwinkel and Sir Ernest Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop.
The Nominal Rolls have recently been consolidated on the DVA website, making it easier to search and find information about more than one million veterans who served in these conflicts.
DVA has provided the education package to more than 17,000 schools as part of a digital mail-out of resources for the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
Readers of Vetaffairs are encouraged to talk to their families about their service history, and have a go at completing the activity.
