How financial abuse can impact veterans and families
Financial abuse can happen when a family member or partner prevents someone from having freedom over their financial decision-making, or uses their money without their consent. This includes being forced into giving up control over their DVA or Centrelink payments and benefits or having someone take money from their accounts.
Financial abuse can happen to anyone regardless of age, gender or background. A common warning sign is exclusion from financial decision-making or exclusion from access to information about household finances. 1800 RESPECT has a financial abuse support toolkit which can assist people experiencing financial abuse.
If you or someone you know is experiencing financial abuse, free confidential advice is available from a financial counsellor by calling the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007. More information is available on their website.
The Australian Government recently announced the Escaping Violence Payment pilot delivered by UnitingCare Australia. This payment helps people who have left a violent relationship to rebuild their lives by providing financial and practical supports. More information is available on their website or by calling 1800 875 559.
There are a range of family and domestic violence and support services available if you or someone you know is experiencing financial abuse. These services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
