Optus data breach information for veterans and their families
You may have seen recent media reports about the Optus data breach, which has led to the identity documents or other details of certain current and former Optus customers being compromised.
DVA is aware of this matter, and is working with our partners and the Australian Cyber Security Centre to remain alert to the possible risks.
What to do if you are concerned?
- In the first instance, check the Optus website for information, contact Optus via the My Optus App or call 133 937.
- Change your passwords and look out for any suspicious or unexpected activity across your online accounts, including your bank accounts. Make sure to report any fraudulent activity immediately to the related provider.
- If you have any concerns that your identity has been stolen, contact IDCARE, the national identity and cyber support service. Useful advice can also be found on the Scamwatch website.
- Resources to mitigate the risk from data breaches can be found on the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) website responding to a data breach notification.
- Look out for contact from scammers who may have your personal information. This could be via emails, texts, phone calls or messages on social media.
- Avoid clicking any links in emails, texts or messages and never provide your passwords, or any personal or financial information.
- If people call you posing as a credible organisation and request access to your computer, always say no.

Available support to you
- Support and assistance is available through Open Arms – Veterans & Families Counsellng for people who have been impacted by the breach and need someone to speak to.
- Clients unable to resolve their complaint with Optus, may lodge a complaint with the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO). TIO is an external dispute resolution scheme that handles privacy-related complaints under the Privacy Act 1988.
