Service to veterans and families recognised with OAM
By Lew MacLeod, MHPE volunteer state representative for Queensland
Men’s Health Peer Education program (MHPE) representative and Aviation Corps Welfare Advocate, Kevin Moss has been recognised in the 2022 Queens Birthday Honours with the award of an Order of Australia Medal, for 30 years of selfless service to his fellow veterans and their families.
Kevin entered the military as a National Serviceman in 1968 and saw operational service during 1969 and 1970 in Vietnam, with the 161 (Independent) Reconnaissance Flight. He joined the Australian Regular Army in 1971, rising through the ranks to become a Regimental Sergeant-Major and eventually retiring with the rank of Captain.
In response to DVA’s initial non-approval of Kevin’s claims for the mental and physical effects of his military service, Kevin developed a lifelong passion and enthusiasm for ensuring that social justice and mental health support was available for all. In particular, Kevin understands that military people often feel safe and comfortable with their mates and has adopted this approach in supporting his fellow veterans through his volunteer work as a MHPE representative.
When asked how he copes with the personal impacts of his veteran health and advocacy roles, Kevin says it is very important to look after yourself, seek help from a trusted mentor, professional or friend, be open with family about your thoughts and feelings, keep fit and don’t carry the load of others forever.
Although there is much work to be done in many areas, Kevin believes there is greater help and support today than in the post-Vietnam era, particularly in the areas of mental health and wellbeing and when transitioning from the Australian Defence Forces.
Kevin has written a book about his experiences in Vietnam and adjusting to civilian life. More details on the Book Shelf page of the last edition of Vetaffairs.
The MHPE Program raises awareness about men’s health issues in the veteran community. The program supports and educates members of the veteran and ex-service community and encourages men to share responsibility for their own health and wellbeing. More information is on the MHPE page of the DVA website.
