Thinking of applying for compensation? What you need to know
There are many different types of compensation, and ways that DVA can pay them to you. For example, if your condition has resulted in a permanent impairment, you may be eligible for compensation in the form of a tax-free fortnightly or lump sum payment. If your condition is impacting your ability to work, you may be eligible for incapacity payments to compensate for your economic loss.
To streamline the claiming process, there are three key steps you can do:
- Get your medical practitioner to confirm your diagnosis in writing
- Supply the documents required
- Check if you are already eligible for free healthcare through DVA.
Claims can be submitted online through MyService, by calling DVA on 1800 VETERAN (1800 838 372), by completing an appropriate claim form or through an advocate.
While you’re waiting for your claim to be accepted, you may be able to access treatment for certain conditions through the Provisional Access to Medical Treatment (PAMT) program if your condition is on the accepted claims list. This is a trial program, which is currently open to eligible veterans until 30 June 2024. Further details about the PAMT is available on the PAMT page of DVA website.
