The Veteran Employment Commitment isn’t just about signatures
More than 800 organisations have signed up to the Veteran Employment Commitment and that number is growing. As a further sign of their dedication, many of these employers have gone on to provide additional support for veterans in the workplace.
The Commitment recognises organisations that employ or support the employment of veterans. It is administered by the Veterans’ Employment Program, which has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 2016.
It is clear that businesses across Australia are recognising the skills and experience of veterans and the value they bring to the civilian workplace.
Some signatories to the Commitment have created veteran networks within their organisations, while others have worked with their recruitment teams to recognise and understand military terminology.
Some have developed best-practice guides and made them available to other organisations. One of these is BAE Systems Australia, winner of the Veterans’ Employer of the Year – Large category at the 2021 Prime Minister’s Veterans’ Employment Awards. Of their workforce of 5,500 people, 10% have served in the military and a further 200 continue to serve as Reservists. As a long-time supporter of veteran employment, the company wanted to help other businesses looking to engage with the veteran workforce. Their veterans’ employment best-practice guide includes advice on how to create and foster supportive workplaces and make the most of the skills veterans bring.
If your organisation is looking to develop a guide or put an existing one into practice, the BAE Systems guide is available on the BAE Systems website.
If your organisation recognises the value that veterans bring to the workplace, be sure to sign up to the Commitment via the Veterans Employment Program website.
