White Ribbon Day a reminder help is always available

This year has been a stressful time for many Australians, including veterans and their families, so it is more important than ever that this White Ribbon Day, those experiencing family and domestic violence receive the support they need.

An often hidden side effect of events that cause significant stress, like the coronavirus pandemic, is the increased risk of family and domestic violence. Please remember that if you’re not safe you can access support – even during coronavirus-related restrictions.

We can connect you to counselling services, financial support and crisis accommodation through Open Arms – Veterans & Families Counselling.

Also, if you are concerned about how you’ve been responding to things recently, it’s ok to ask for help. It’s important we understand the cycle of violence; not all disrespect results in violence, but all violence starts with disrespectful behaviour.

Family and domestic violence can include any conduct that is violent, threatening, coercive, controlling or intended to cause the family or household member to be fearful. It can happen to anyone.

1 in 6 Australian women and 1 in 16 men have experienced domestic violence, and the majority of these cases occur in their home. That means someone you know has experienced family and domestic violence. Survivors of family and domestic violence can be from any background, gender or age group, including children, adults and the elderly.
