Veterans’ Walking and Coffee Group
Just before the last lockdown in Victoria, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) veteran, Steve, established a veterans’ walking and coffee group in Frankston on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. The walking group is dog- and child-friendly, although you don’t need to have either. Steve is excited that the walking group has created an opportunity for veterans to come together and support one another through social connection and physical activity.
Steve joined the RAAF at just 18 and worked as a chef during his 10-year career. After he was medically discharged, he continued to work in the hospitality industry but soon realised he was struggling with his mental health. He sought the assistance and support offered through the Open Arms Peer Adviser Service and Vasey RSL Care where he was provided with support, up-skilling and assistance to secure stable accommodation to help him find his feet. Steve was able to re-engage in community activities, making a huge difference not only for him, but also for others.
Steve has adopted a beautiful greyhound named Elton. He loves taking Elton for walks and meeting people. ‘I really enjoy walking and being in nature, with no distractions, no phones and just having a chat,’ he says.
Steve is keen to share the improved health benefits associated with walking that he has seen already in himself and other members of the group, including weight loss, improved fitness, and decreased stress levels.
If you live on the Mornington Peninsula and would like to join Steve, he schedules regular walks in various locations and is looking forward to meeting other veterans in the area. The Frankston Veterans Walking and Coffee Group can found on Facebook.
Alternatively, you could set up a similar group in your area.
