ANZAC Memorial, Hong Kong
Description
The memorial constructed of stone, is 2770mm high and 1520mm wide and is engraved with the Ode, a golden wattle and silver fern motif.
History
The memorial was installed and dedicated at the Australian International School Hong Kong for ANZAC Day 2003. It was formally unveiled on ANZAC Day 2004.
Of special note was that the Hon Mark Vaile, Australian Minister for Trade and the Hon Jim Sutton, New Zealand Minister for Trade Negotiations, who were in Hong Kong following the Boao Forum, formally unveiled the permanent ANZAC Memorial at the school.
The Memorial was designed by the New Zealand and Australian Consuls-General in Hong Kong, in consultation with the Australian Government Department of Veterans' Affairs in Canberra. The permanent Memorial at the school site will help ensure that future generations continue to appreciate the historical significance of ANZAC Day.
It has become a tradition for wreaths and flowers laid at the Australian International School Hong Kong (AISHK) ANZAC Day Service to be taken after the ceremony and re-laid at the main Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery at Sai Wan. This is not a public event but the public can visit any of the three War Cemeteries in Hong Kong during opening hours.
