Five years after the end of the Second World War, 17,000 Australian troops were again called into action; of these, 340 Australians fighting with the United Nations forces during the Korean War lost their lives. Cemeteries overseas

United Nations Memorial Cemetery, Korea

Of the Australian war dead, 281 lie with thousands of their UN allies in the United Nations Memorial Cemetery (UNMCK). The 12.4 hectare cemetery at Tanggok, Pusan in Korea is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) for the UNMCK in 1973. The 11 nations, including Australia, contribute proportionately to the upkeep of the cemetery.

Yokohama War Cemetery, Japan

Ten Australian war dead from Korea are buried at the Yokohama War Cemetery in Japan, in the Post-War Plot.

Cemeteries and Gardens of Remembrance in Australia

Eleven Australians died after return to Australia during the war period. They now rest in civil cemeteries and crematoria, with their official commemoration either at the gravesite or crematorium or at an OAWG Garden of Remembrance, in accordance with the wishes of their family.

Australian National Korean War Memorial

The Australian National Korean War Memorial on Anzac Parade, Canberra commemorates and honours those who died and served in the Korean War. Responsibility for maintaining the memorial rests with the National Capital Authority.

Memorial to the Missing

Within the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea, a Memorial to the Missing commemorates 44 Australians and other members of the UN forces who died during the Korean War but have no known grave. This memorial is maintained by the CWGC.
