Background on the review

In March 2018, the Minister for Veterans' Affairs and the then Treasurer jointly announced an inquiry to be undertaken by the Productivity Commission into the system of compensation and rehabilitation for veterans (Serving and Ex-serving Australian Defence Force members).

The Productivity Commission released an Issues Paper on 3 May 2018 and called for submissions to the inquiry.

The Department of Veterans' Affairs provided its submission to the inquiry in July 2018, (see submission number 125).

On 4 July 2019 the Government tabled the final report of the Commission.

Interim Government response

The Australian Government delivered an interim response to the Productivity Commission’s report A Better Way to Support Veterans, as part of the Budget 2020–21 process.

The interim Government response addresses 25 of the report’s 69 recommendations, and, through the Budget 2020–21, announces a package of measures focused on mental health, wellbeing, employment support and transition.

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester tabled and released the interim Government response on 8 October 2020.
