For Major Membrey, this was not as simple, or safe, as many had thought. Through humour and humility, he tells the tales that befell him inside Afghanistan, with many a close call.

Viking Boys – Beaufighters, Bravery and Lost Airmen

Viking Boys follows the true story of Beaufighter pilot James Hakewill and his navigator Fred Sides who died in December 1944, when their aircraft slammed into the German gunboat Geuse sweeping that vessel’s anti-aircraft guns from the deck of the ship, before plunging to the depths of the Orsta fjord in Norway. Uncovering James Hakewill’s story, Viking Boys reveals the amazing history of No. 455 (RAAF) Squadron and the young Australians who fought and flew against German shipping in the fjords of Norway – and called themselves the Viking Boys. The book is unusual as it also reveals what happened in December 1944 through the eyes of German, Australian and Norwegian witnesses to the raid.

A Soldier’s View of the Vietnam War: The story of Victor 4, V COY, 6 RAR/NZ (ANZAC) Battalion

By Victor 4 Company

Book cover of A Soldier's View

It is rare that a military history book is written from the perspective of the soldier by the soldier. This book is one of those. It is written by the men and officers of Victor 4 Coy, New Zealanders who served in the Vietnam War from 1969–1970, who tell about their experiences of combat in a faraway land. The book was written not to celebrate war but to tell the next generation about what was experienced. It is also a testament to those seven comrades who gave their lives for their country.

Godley – The man behind the myth

By Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) T.J. Kinloch, MNZM

Book cover of Godley

This biography tells the story of General Sir Alexander Godley, the much-misunderstood and under-rated British general who commanded New Zealand and Australian troops at Gallipoli and on the Western Front during the First World War. Its contents and conclusions will challenge readers who have bought into the prevailing myth that Godley was an incompetent and callous 'chateau general' who cared more for his personal reputation and enrichment than for the soldiers he commanded. The author contends that Godley was a capable general who serves as a convenient 'Imperial scapegoat' for the failings of others and for the impossible circumstances of the war.
