Veterans’ mental health

Training programs are available for:

Understanding the military experience A logo to represent that this is a CPD accredited course.

To gain a better understanding of the experience and meaning of military culture in relation to veteran mental health. This program will help to increase your confidence in responding to veterans’ mental health needs. Access the ‘Understanding the military experience’ course via DVAtrain.

Webinar series: Veteran mental health A logo to represent that this is a CPD accredited course.

A series of 15 free online webinars designed to help clinicians, practice nurses and other clinical practice staff to better support the mental health needs of veterans.

Suicide prevention and veteran community A logo to represent that this is a CPD accredited course.

To better recognise the risk indicators, warning signs and protective factors for suicide in the veteran community, and support services available for veterans and their families.

Available through our mental health public website Open Arms . This course will help you to recognise the risk indicators and warning signs for suicide in the veteran community.

Working with veterans with mental health problems (for GPs) A logo to represent that this is a CPD accredited course.

Important Notice: The online program ‘Working with veterans with Mental Health Problems’ is currently unavailable due to changes in hosting arrangements. We are working with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners to have the program available again as soon as possible, along with ensuring GPs can continue to access Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points upon completion. We are committed to ensuring health professionals have access to veteran-specific online professional development programs and appreciate your patience while these changes are underway.

PTSD — psychological interventions A logo to represent that this is a CPD accredited course.

This program is for mental health clinicians to better understand treatments for PTSD, including:

  • case studies
  • active learning activities
  • video demonstrations

Non-liability health care (NLHC)

This course is for those people helping veterans to understand:

  • who is eligible for NLHC
  • how to apply for NLHC

For eligible veterans, NLHC covers:

  • cancer (malignant neoplasm)
  • pulmonary tuberculosis
  • any mental health condition

Case formulation and treatment planning training

This program assists clinicians to:

  • identify presenting mental health problems likely to have the most impact on recovery
  • set priorities for treatment

Users will:

  • learn case formulation approach from experts
  • watch demonstrations of case formulation
  • practice case formulation based on veteran case studies

Rehabilitation program for our providers

This course provides:

  • an overview of our rehabilitation program for veterans
  • relevant guidelines

It is mandatory for our contracted rehabilitation providers and consultants.

The key elements of the course are:

  • key information on the referral and initial rehabilitation assessment
  • rehabilitation plan development
  • Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS)
  • policy and case management

DVAtrain

Accessing courses through DVAtrain

DVAtrain, also known as Pulse, is our main training site for you to undertake courses that support your work with veteran health care.

You will need to sign in to DVAtrain to complete courses and print CPD certificates. If it’s your first time signing in you will need to register.

Register

To register for DVAtrain you will need to:

  1. Go to the registration page
  2. Enter ‘EXT’ for the registration code then press the ‘Get Started’ button
  3. Fill in your details and press the ‘Register’ button.

Note: External Rehabilitation Consultants are asked not to use this code and instead ask their DVA Relationship Manager for the unique rehabilitation only code.

Once you have registered you will receive an email with:

  • your sign-in details
  • your password
  • a direct link to DVAtrain

The first time you sign in you will need to reset your password.

If you need help

If you are having problems registering or signing into DVAtrain you can email the help desk at PSB.Learning.and.Development [at] dva.gov.au

Please include your contact number in the message so we can call you to discuss any issues.

If you are an Australian Defence Force (ADF) member, you may have trouble accessing DVAtrain from the ADF’s computer network. ADF members need to access DVAtrain on a device outside the ADF network.
