COVID-19 and War Graves

COVID-19 is not significantly affecting the work of the Office of Australian War Graves.

While travel restrictions due to COVID-19 have affected how we move around the country, the Office of Australian War Graves (OAWG) is not experiencing any significant delays with the installation of official commemorations for eligible veterans, whether that be in a civil cemetery, lawn cemetery, niche plaque, ashes placements or at one of our 10 Gardens of Remembrance across Australia.

As visitors to cemeteries and Gardens of Remembrance have been complying with social distancing measures, and because the work of the OAWG is generally isolated by its nature, we are still able to maintain the 72 Commonwealth War Graves Commission War Cemeteries and War Plots to the highest standards.

While coronavirus restrictions have impacted some of the traditional ways we commemorate our fallen service men and women, Australians have still found innovative ways to acknowledge service and sacrifice.
Despite COVID-19 restrictions, we encourage all Australians to continue to pay their respects in a dignified and solemn manner, and at all times follow current health advice.
