Description
Known as McDonald's Corner Memorial: this memorial consists of plaques commemorating the 39th Infantry Battalion, who fought during the Kokoda campaign. There is also white wire sculpture of a soldier.
History
This memorial was erected by Mr R.J McDonald, the son of a plantation owner who lived in this area with his family during the Second World War. So impressed was he with the achievements of the 39th Infantry Battalion during the Kokoda campaign that he was moved to create and erect this memorial in 1966.
In 1942, McDonald's Corner marked the terminus of the road for motor vehicle traffic from Port Moresby. It was here, on the 12th of July 1942, that members of B Coy, 39th Infantry Battalion disembarked from their vehicles and advanced along the Kokoda track to engage the enemy.
