DVA veteran families forum wrap
The Veteran Families Policy Forum was held in Brisbane on 12-13 March 2024. The forum brought together a diverse group of veteran community members who engaged with senior leaders from state and federal government departments, DVA and Defence, including the Minister for Veterans' Affairs, then Hon Matt Keogh MP, and DVA Secretary Alison Frame.
The forum facilitated meaningful discussions and collaborations that will help shape the future of support services for veterans and veteran families. Attendees had the opportunity to present their ideas and share feedback directly with senior leaders from DVA and Defence.
Participants discussed crucial issues facing veteran families and worked together with DVA staff to brainstorm practical solutions. They explored policy and service delivery concepts covering various topics such as the Defence and Veteran Wellbeing Family Strategy, mental health support, young people and children, caring for veterans and families, and Veteran Support Officer services.
Participants were invited to showcase examples of initiatives from their communities that support veterans and families. Presentations were made by:
- Northern Territory Veteran’s Affairs Ministerial Advisory Council
- Cowork Coplay Programs
- RSL LifeCare projects
- Military and Emergency Services Health Australia (MESHA)
- Green Fox Studio
- The Oasis Townsville
- Legacy Brisbane.
‘I have watched the evolution of these [forums] into a powerful advocacy for military families,’ said one forum participant. ‘I never imagined the groundswell of extraordinary people who have taken this space into a whole new stratosphere. Nor could I have chosen a better group of people to have around me. My thank you is simple but represents extreme gratitude for your commitment to making the world a better place.’
A report summarising the discussions and feedback from the Veteran Families Policy Forum will be accessible on the DVA website in the coming weeks. For more information or to access past reports visit the Consultation with Veteran Families page.
DVA extends its gratitude to the Forum participants for their dedication, time, and enthusiasm.
