Kudamati Memorial
Description
The local name for the memorial is Tugu Doolan: a stone memorial with inscribed plaque.
History
On 1 February 1942, the Japanese launched several simultaneous attacks on Ambon, one of these was targeted at an Australian transport unit at Kudamati. Fierce fighting ensued with many casualties and the Allies were forced to surrender their position on 3 February 1942.
This memorial commemorates the battle, in particular Driver W T Doolan of the 2/21st. Battalion, who courageously defended his position during battle while his comrades were retreating south toward Ambon Island. When the Japanese discovered his hiding spot they killed him. The local villagers were forbidden from burying Pte Doolan, however under cover of darkness the villagers buried him under a tree, where the memorial stands. The memorial is known to the local community as Tugu Doolan, or Doolan.
The Ambonese have written a song in his honour and keep his grave supplied with fresh flowers. The original cross from Driver Doolan's grave is now in the Australian War Memorial's collection (RELIC AWM30745).
