Description

The memorial consists of a stone monolith engraved with the words, in Danish, 'Here rest four allied airmen. They fell also in the battle for the freedom of Denmark'. The memorial also has a brass memorial plaque, which reads 'Presented to the people of Kappel, on behalf of the government of Australia, in recognition of their continuing devotion to the care of the graves of four allied airmen of the Second World War, including that of Flight Sergeant Norman Newell, Air Gunner Royal Australian Air Force. Died February 1944'.

A memorial erected to the memory of four Allied Airmen who fell in the battle for the freedom of Denmark near Vesternæsvej.

The plaque from Australia was presented in 1997.

Location

Knubbelokkevej, Kappel, Denmark.

From Copenhagen head northwest on the 02 which becomes route 21. Turn onto the 04 then merge onto the E47. Take 48-Maribo exit towards Tars/Nakskov onto route 9 (Vestre Landevej) then turn left onto route 291 (Hojrebyvej). Turn left onto Winchellsgade, left onto Nybro and right onto Skandsen which becomes Langovej. Turn left onto Kappelvej then left onto Knubbelokkevej.

The memorial is located within the Kappel Kirke (Kappel Churchyard).
