The memorial, with a plaque and in its own small enclosure, is a stone base which supports one of the two Pegasus engines which crashed in the Cairngorm Mountains region.

This memorial commemorates the crew of Wellington R1646, two of whom were Australian,

who lost their lives in February 1942 when it crashed, as well as to all airmen who lost their lives in the Cairngorm Mountains in aviation crashes over the years.

In 1999 a local man, who helped in rescue attempts for the 1942 crash, applied to the Ministry of Defence for permission to recover the Pegasus engines from the R1646 crash site with the idea of somehow incorporating them into a memorial.

Gerry Robb, an Architectural Designer from Aboyne in Aberdeenshire designed the memorial which could incorporate one of the two Pegasus engines.

Braemar, Scotland.

The memorial is situated in the centre of Braemar in its own small enclosure right next to the village War Memorial.
