History

The Memorial commemorates the crash within the local area, in separate accidents, of two aircraft - a RAF Lancaster Bomber DV382 on 13 February 1944 and an American Dakota 43-16397 on 11 February 1945, with the resultant loss of 15 lives. The respective crews comprised Service personnel from America, Canada, Australia and Britain.

Construction Information

The Memorial Plaque, which is made of white Italian Aura stone and worked by Richard Klose, Master Stone Mason, has the 617 Squadron insignia (motto: Apres Moi le Deluge) and the chevron of The 27th Transport Group, USAC painted and fired in enamel on steel and set into the stone by enamellist Gillie Hoyte Byrom.

Upwaltham, England.

From London take the A3 toward Guildford, the A283 to Petworth then the A285 to Upwaltham. The memorial is located within St Mary the Virgin Church.
