Kundasang War Memorial
Description
Known as Kundasang Memorial Gardens: the memorial is made up of four gardens to represent the different nationalities - the Australian Garden, the English Garden, the Borneo Garden and the Contemplation Garden and Pool where most ceremonies are held.
History
The Kundasang Memorial Gardens were one of the first memorials to commemorate the 2,428 Australian and British Prisoners of War who died in Sandakan and on the death marches to Ranau during World War II. The memorial also honours the local people who risked their lives helping POWs.
Over the years, the Gardens deteriorated and a restoration process began in late 2004 funded by the custodian and caretaker of the Gardens, Mr Sevee Charuruks, on behalf of Working Alliance Lead Sdn Bhd, which was appointed on behalf of the State Government of Sabah, Malaysia.
In 2008/09 the Australian funding was used for the installation of secure perimeter fencing and the construction of an audio-visual building to house photos and memorabilia from families and relatives of the POWs. The building is called the Australian Memorial Hall and was opened by the Australian High Commissioner Her Excellency Ms Penny Williams, on 17 August 2009.
The new audio-visual building houses a theatrette which is used for the introductory educational video shown to visitors. It also contains display cabinets for the extensive collection of photographs, newspaper clippings and other memorabilia.
Construction Information
The Memorial was designed by local architect J.C. Robinson. It consists of four interlocking but separate gardens to represent the homelands of those who died: an Australian Garden, a formal English Garden of roses, a Borneo Garden with wild flowers of Kinabalu and at the top level is the 'Contemplation Garden' with a reflection pool and pergola. Built originally due to the persuasive efforts of New Zealand's Major GS 'Toby' Carter, the gardens were opened in 1962. Funds for the gardens were raised by the Sabah ex-Services associations and were originally maintained by Ranau District Council and voluntary groups. Over the years following its establishment, the memorial deteriorated. A restoration process was begun in late 2004 funded by the current custodian and caretaker of the memorial, Mr Sevee Charuks. The State Government of Sabah has also funded the installation of granite Rolls of Honour in the Gardens, inscribed with the names of the POW's. The Australian Government provided funding assistance to the Kundasang War Memorial under the recently established Overseas Privately-Constructed Memorial Restoration Program (OPCMRP). The support provided for construction of an audio-visual gallery, which in recognition of the funding was entitled the Australian Memorial Hall, and the installation of secure perimeter fencing around the site.
