Quailey's Hill Memorial
Description
Known as the Death March Memorial: stone memorial with brass plaque and inscription.
History
Allan Quailey enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in August 1941, joined the 2/30th Australian Infantry Battalion and sailed for Malaya with the Australian 8th Division. On Singapore’s fall, 15 February 1942, he was incarcerated in a camp near Changi village. In July, Allan was among 1500 Australians transferred from Singapore to Sandakan and then placed in the draft for the first death march to Ranau. Unable to keep up, the Japanese killed him.
Post-war, the bodies of those who had died along the track were recovered and reburied in Labuan War Cemetery. Quailey, who was unidentified, remained ’Known unto God’ until 1999, when a grave in Labuan was identified as that of Private Quailey.
