Labuan Museum Memorial
Description
Known as Maida Island Memorial: a circular memorial constructed of white stone with an Australian Commonwealth Military Forces badge and an inscription plaque surrounded by a fence.
History
The memorial commemorates... 'the landing of units of the 9th Division Australian Imperial Forces on 10th June 1945 which led to the liberation of Labuan and British Borneo from the Japanese'.
During the Second World War, Labuan was occupied by Japan from December 1941 to June 1945 and governed as part of the Northern Borneo military unit by the Japanese 37th Army. Labuan was renamed Maida Island after the first commander of Japanese forces in northern Borneo. The island was retaken by Australian forces in June 1945 and Labuan assumed its former name.
The military cemetery on Labuan contains various war graves and memorials to the fallen of World War II including British, Australian, Indian, Sarawakian, Bruneian, North Borneo and Empire troops.
